Chemistry Experiment – What Makes Things Dissolve?

by D.M., G.B., C.T., and R.R.
We had a lot of fun with our dissolving experiments today. We first predicted in class what one element would make our candy dissolve in the cup of water the fastest. G.B. and C.T. thought that stirring would dissolve it the fastest as the fast moving water around the candy would break it apart quickly. R.R. thought that breaking the candy into small bits would be the best, as there would be more total surface area of the candy exposed to water. I thought that using hot water would work the best because the hot water molecules would make the candy melt.
As it turns out, we were all sort of right but in the end the stirring worked the best to dissolve the candy. I guess that’s why we stir in juice crystals and not add hot water to the jug!
